They are both desktops and Gnome Flashback can be run on it's own as the only desktop without Gnome. While Gnome Classic can't be. Here I take a look at both.</p><p>This is a good alternative for users coming from Windows who want a light desktop. Gnome Flashback is very light. It can run on laptops with low hardware.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/38PNgH3iNDc" width="320" youtube-src-id="38PNgH3iNDc"></iframe></div><br /><p><br /></p>Andrea Borman.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03057848683318811661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8010131370198412479.post-71082106198980431872024-02-23T23:44:00.004+00:002024-02-23T23:44:35.198+00:00Linux Mint With Gnome.<p> This is my other laptop with Linux Mint Gnome Desktop.</p><p>There are a lot of customisation options in Gnome which are just hidden but can be enabled with Dconf Editor.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cRqkVJDW9ko" width="320" youtube-src-id="cRqkVJDW9ko"></iframe></div><br /><p><br /></p>Andrea Borman.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03057848683318811661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8010131370198412479.post-36134810906876687782024-02-23T23:42:00.000+00:002024-02-23T23:42:01.536+00:00Linux Mint With KDE Desktop.<p> Here is Linux Mint 21.2 with the Kubuntu/KDE Desktop on my laptop.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IAz9A5Y2wvU" width="320" youtube-src-id="IAz9A5Y2wvU"></iframe></div><br /><p><br /></p>Andrea Borman.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03057848683318811661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8010131370198412479.post-29166124035049191902024-02-23T23:24:00.005+00:002024-02-23T23:52:52.077+00:00I have Finally Quit Windows For Linux.<p>After using Windows for over ten years I have finally left Windows for Linux. Linux Mint to be exact. Microsoft stopped support for Windows 7 in 2019 but I carried on using it because I did not want to give it up and upgrade to Windows 10. I also used Windows 8 even though support for that stopped before 2019 as Microsoft was only supporting Windows 8.1. Which I could not upgrade to because you could only do it from the Microsoft Store. But because I was running 8 on a netbook I could not get any of the Metro Apps to work and the Microsoft Store is a Metro Apps. So there was no way I could upgrade.</p><span><a name='more'></a></span><p><br /></p><p>So I stayed on Windows 8 even though I could not get updates then in 2022 I found out that both Firefox and Google Chrome was no longer going to support Windows 7 or 8 only Windows 10. So that meant that if I stayed on 8 I would be using an out of date web browsers as well as other software. Which was no longer supported because software makers were no longer updating or making new versions for Windows 8. The same thing happened with Windows XP and Windows Vista so there was no choice but to either install Windows 10 or find another operating system.</p><p><br /></p><p>So I decided to install Linux Mint 20.3 XFCE which was the current version at the time in June 2022 and I have never regretted it. I have since got rid of all my old Netbooks and my Windows DVD,s . Because my Netbooks were very old, well they came with Windows 7 Starter when I bought them in 2010 and would only run 32 bit. Linux now only supports 64 bit or at least most Linux distros do. Except for Debian as far as I know but then if you choose to run 32 bit Linux you are restricted to what software you can use as most software is now is only being made for 64 bit. So I bought a couple of new laptops that came with Windows 11 which was horrible.</p><p>I could not even log in without a Microsoft account and even then I found it was in S Mode which I could not get out of. So I was glad to uninstall it to get it off my computer and installed Linux Mint. I first booted into the live CD and everything was working so I went ahead and installed Linux Mint. I remember with Windows when had to install it the drivers did not work and I had to install them all from the back up CD but with Linux all of my drivers were working. So I did not have to do anything.</p><p>I now run Linux on my computer full time and I have never looked back. I did try Linux a log time ago in 2010 and it was Linux Mint I tried then. But in those days Linux was not as user friendly as what it is now and with Windows 10 being what it is and Windows 11 is even worse I think more people are looking for alternatives. Linux is working well for me as a lot of the desktops do have the Windows style taskbar and start menu that you don't get in Windows 8, 10 or 11.</p><p><br /></p><p>I used to like Windows when we had Windows 7 but that changed when they made Windows 8 which had no start menu and the Metro Theme which I hated. another reason I decided to change to Linux was because my browsers and everything was constantly crashing on Windows 8 and things took a long time to open. So in the end I decided I had had enough and thought I would try Linux. Since everything in Linux is kept up to date and support for Windows 8 had ended anyway. Also you cannot get one the web or do anything in an outdated web browser which is what I would have been using if I had stayed on 8.</p><p>I am finding Linux Mint very stable and it is very user friendly. Updated are installed in minutes not hours as they were on Windows. All of the software I am using is in Linux and everything is working so well. There is nothing about Windows that I miss and I am glad I made the switch to Linux. Linux is not so difficult to lean in fact it is easy to get used to than it was on Windows. No waiting hours for updates to install. No more freezing or crashing of my computer and it is also safer. There are many Linux distros but I am sticking with Linux Mint and more recently I started using Debian which is what both Ubuntu and Linux Mint are based on. I have made some videos about this as I think it would help others who are maybe looking for an alternative to Windows 11.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTqwbVZ96B-Jsx04x2kc5dPCQz1QJO-D9m6l7roTDE5-yoEky2j9pekahyphenhyphenSCU3Jf73m91jIHXrKJ-l7oth2lrSv1ePU2zbsSLYSCoC3PHeMM_phpCKTbRtTW0TjRJmdPum7LdLUEiJxmfrQPDhgaAAXmPgisl7gXgjJS7C2LpAZnWR2AT-xFSf90FW-DQ/s1920/Linux%20Mint%20KDE.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTqwbVZ96B-Jsx04x2kc5dPCQz1QJO-D9m6l7roTDE5-yoEky2j9pekahyphenhyphenSCU3Jf73m91jIHXrKJ-l7oth2lrSv1ePU2zbsSLYSCoC3PHeMM_phpCKTbRtTW0TjRJmdPum7LdLUEiJxmfrQPDhgaAAXmPgisl7gXgjJS7C2LpAZnWR2AT-xFSf90FW-DQ/s320/Linux%20Mint%20KDE.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Very happy on my computer with my Linux Desktop. Windows 95,98 and Windows ME had the 16 bit version from Windows 3x. There was also a 32 bit version that was in Windows NT3,Windows NT4 and Windows 2000. But Microsoft disabled Program Manager in Windows XP. It's still in there but it does not run and was removed altogether from Windows Vista onward.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The 16 bit version runs on Windows XP,Windows 7 and 8 but does not save any programs so you cannot do anything with it. I have tried to install the 32 bit version on Windows 8, by copying the Progman Exe from Windows NT4 and then Windows NT3.51, but it just does not run.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The other day I came across a post on the web from a user named Floyd from Chorus Of One website which is his website. He has adapted the 32 bit Program Manager from Windows NT 3.51 to work on Windows XP, and later Windows, including Windows 8. He also said in his post that he has got it working on Windows 10. And he has made the program available to all who want to use it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I downloaded it from his website and it works on my Windows 8, and I also tried it on Windows 7 and Windows XP. So if you miss the old Program Manager here is how to get it back. Download the Program from his website and place all of the files in the <b>C\Windows\System32</b> folder on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On Windows XP you need to rename the Progman Exe you have downloaded to something like <b>Progman2. </b>Because there is already a Progman in System32 and System File Protection won't let you delete it. If you try to do so it will just replace it with the inactive Windows one. That's why you need to rename it. But once you have done that, place all of the files in <b>C\Windows\System32, </b>the same as on Windows 7, and it will work.<br />
<br />
Here is Program Manager on Windows 8.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0mdk3LuC3og/XZ0LGv-bk2I/AAAAAAAAB2w/JHrV45KORjYG1qa0i50rEuFMocs3X1kOwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/PM%2BWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="261" data-original-width="464" height="180" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0mdk3LuC3og/XZ0LGv-bk2I/AAAAAAAAB2w/JHrV45KORjYG1qa0i50rEuFMocs3X1kOwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PM%2BWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here it is on Windows 7.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pAU7zX54w3c/XZ0LRxRNpoI/AAAAAAAAB20/M1z1_MUljjsoMQ0e0xl0uht7u-k90Y5eQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/PM%2BWin7..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="261" data-original-width="464" height="180" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pAU7zX54w3c/XZ0LRxRNpoI/AAAAAAAAB20/M1z1_MUljjsoMQ0e0xl0uht7u-k90Y5eQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PM%2BWin7..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And this is Program Manager on Windows XP.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tEf3FbJiKHg/XZ0LvmiZBII/AAAAAAAAB3A/gIE8ZCaUKKwXXHeDi4FbezA5gBL75IMuACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/PM%2BWinXP..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="261" data-original-width="464" height="180" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tEf3FbJiKHg/XZ0LvmiZBII/AAAAAAAAB3A/gIE8ZCaUKKwXXHeDi4FbezA5gBL75IMuACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/PM%2BWinXP..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
You can create program groups as well as drag and drop program files into it.<br />
<br />
See it in action in my video.<br />

Because the problem with the one on Windows 8 is that you can no longer view or manage your start up programs from there as Microsoft have removed this feature. So it does not work anymore, you now have to go to the Windows 8 Task Manager.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But if you have replaced the TM with the Windows 7,Windows XP or Windows NT4 Task Manager you cannot do this. As they do not have this so there is no way to manage your start up programs. Unless you use a third party tool like CCleaner which is all very well but not everyone wants to do that. As CCleaner has some advanced settings where you can delete an important Windows start up program accidentally. So that's not the solution, unless you really know what you are doing.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yes it is possible to install the MSConfig from Windows XP as I showed you <b><span style="color: #cc0000;"><a href="https://andreaborman2.blogspot.com/2019/09/get-back-classic-msconfig-on-windows-8.html">here in this post.</a></span></b></div>
<div>
You can view and manage your start up programs with it, but it falls short of what I want, and does not have the full functions of the MSConfig from Windows 7. But the good news is I now found a way to get the System Configuration from Windows 7 back on Windows 8.</div>
</div>
<div>
So if you are as fed up with the Windows 8 MSConfig as I am, here is how you can get back the Windows 7 one on 8.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You need to extract 2 files from either a Windows 7 install CD or a PC running Windows 7. One is the exe program file from Windows 7 and the other is the MUI file that is needed for the program to run on Windows 8.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
These are:</div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">msconfig.exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">msconfig.exe.mui</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Once you have got those files copy them to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What we are going to do is replace both the Windows 8 msconfig Exe and MUI files with the ones from Windows 7. But before you do that you need to take ownership of both files because otherwise Windows won't allow you to do this. The easiest way is to install a software called Take Ownership.<br />
<br />
Go to your <b>C\Windows\System32</b> folder on Windows 8 and look the language folder that your Windows is installed in. For example, I have got Windows 8 installed in English United States language so my MUI files are in the <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">en-US</span> </b>folder as shown here circled in red.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3E1igAduLO8/XZ3LbQTSyAI/AAAAAAAAB3M/XJV8kpKG7Dgre8EkgH5pwL4SBmAK6xHFACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/EN%2Bfolder%2BWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3E1igAduLO8/XZ3LbQTSyAI/AAAAAAAAB3M/XJV8kpKG7Dgre8EkgH5pwL4SBmAK6xHFACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/EN%2Bfolder%2BWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
There may also be other language folders in System32 and you need to know the language you installed Windows in as the MUI files will be in that. If you installed Windows in English United Kingdom you need to look for the <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">en-GB</span></b> folder.<br />
<br />
Once inside that folder look for the file called <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">msconfig.exe.mui</span> <span style="color: blue;">and Take Ownership of that file and delete it.</span></b><br />
<br />
Now copy and paste the <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">msconfig.exe.mui file you got from Windows 7</span> </b>into the <b>en-US</b> (language folder) in <b>C\Windows\System32 on Windows 8.</b><br />
<br />
Once that is done go back to your <b>C\Windows\System32 folder</b> again.<br />
Look for the <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">msconfig.exe</span> </b>as shown in picture marked in red,<b> </b>then <b><span style="color: blue;">Take Ownership of it and delete it.</span></b><br />
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZBXFpoZXHcM/XZ3MT4iVfaI/AAAAAAAAB3U/zpaODHRja4g82N2ik-tGAwxgNmz9XAVdQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Msconfigexe%2BWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZBXFpoZXHcM/XZ3MT4iVfaI/AAAAAAAAB3U/zpaODHRja4g82N2ik-tGAwxgNmz9XAVdQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Msconfigexe%2BWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
Copy and paste the <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">msconfig.exe </span></b>from Windows 7 into <b>C\Windows\System32 folder.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Now run the program by clicking on the exe file.<br />
<br />
System Configuration, MSConfig, from Windows 7 is now installed on Windows 8.<br />
As you can see it is working on my Windows 8 and is fully functional. And does all the things it does on Windows 7. But more important you can now see and manage your start up programs on 8 without any problems.<br />

This was Windows NT3x and the first version was Windows NT 3.1. Then there was Windows NT 3.5, then NT 3.51. All of the Windows NT3's looked exactly like Windows 3.1, except they were 32 bit, did not have DOS. Where as Windows 3x was 16 bit, and was also a DOS operating system that could boot into DOS, and run DOS programs.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Well Windows NT3 had all of the same software that Windows 3.1 16 bit had,so you can run all of the apps on 64 bit Windows, since the software from NT3 is 32 bit. I was digging around in my Windows NT 3.51 CD, and thought I would try out some software on my Windows 7 and 8.<br />
<br />
One of these is the Control Panel from Windows NT 3.51, taken from the installation CD which actually works on all later Windows including Windows 8. So here is how you can get the Classic Control Panel on Windows XP,Windows Vista, Windows 7 and 8. And I am not talking about the Classic Start Menu or Control Panel from Windows 95 or 98. <b><i>I mean the real Classic Control Panel</i> <i>that is in Windows NT 3.51</i></b> before Microsoft changed it in Windows NT4, to the one we know now.<br />
So without wasting anymore time here goes.<br />
<br />
You need a Windows NT 3.51 installation CD or a PC running Windows NT 3.51, but it's more likely you will just have the install CD. Since it is difficult to install Windows NT 3.51 on a modern laptop.<br />
<br />
Extract both the <b><span style="color: blue;">Control.exe</span></b> and <b><span style="color: blue;">Control.hlp</span> </b>files from the CD, onto Windows 8 or whatever version of Windows you want to run it on. As there is already an exe file named <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Control</span></b> in Windows 8,7,Vista and XP in the Windows System32 folder. You need to rename the Control Exe you got from Windows NT 3.51 to something like <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Control1</span></b> so it does not conflict with the one already in System32.<br />
<br />
Now place both the renamed exe and hlp files from Windows NT 3.51 in your <b>C\Windows\System32</b> folder on Windows XP,Vista,7 and 8 or 8.1.<br />
<br />
Now run the program and you can create a shortcut to it in your desktop or start menu if you want.<br />
<br />
This is the Windows NT 3.51 Control Panel on my Windows 8 and as you can see it works.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ISfJz0vUGCc/XZzaTswV-9I/AAAAAAAAB1o/G_5LKQlvx0Ath9QxxS-CgCrNBuWY2lGLQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/NT3CPWin8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ISfJz0vUGCc/XZzaTswV-9I/AAAAAAAAB1o/G_5LKQlvx0Ath9QxxS-CgCrNBuWY2lGLQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/NT3CPWin8.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T4ITQVcQRxU/XZzaaxmp_MI/AAAAAAAAB1s/PuNQG-HCG4IORVqCN_buXqoMVKSXM5QLQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/NT3CPWin8.2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T4ITQVcQRxU/XZzaaxmp_MI/AAAAAAAAB1s/PuNQG-HCG4IORVqCN_buXqoMVKSXM5QLQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/NT3CPWin8.2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I can launch all of my programs from here and it also displays a them in list view.<br />
<br />
This is how it looks on Windows 7.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qCTzlufgqsk/XZza4DP8ueI/AAAAAAAAB14/QIsz7ZKrbIQg1pAdUOaQctlMe9yVc_bsQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/NT3CPWin7..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="261" data-original-width="464" height="180" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qCTzlufgqsk/XZza4DP8ueI/AAAAAAAAB14/QIsz7ZKrbIQg1pAdUOaQctlMe9yVc_bsQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/NT3CPWin7..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And this is the Control Panel from Windows NT 3.51 on Windows XP.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eVmDs15ojzA/XZzbTjGsU0I/AAAAAAAAB2A/RxVp6C5fGxA4-JmNnGuyYBAwADe0p5uCwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/NT3CPWinXP..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="261" data-original-width="464" height="180" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eVmDs15ojzA/XZzbTjGsU0I/AAAAAAAAB2A/RxVp6C5fGxA4-JmNnGuyYBAwADe0p5uCwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/NT3CPWinXP..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Sure, some of the programs such as add and remove programs don't show up, but I suspect it's because they don't have that in NT 3.51. But it still works and if you missed the old Control Panel this is an easy way to get it back again. And you can still run the Windows XP, 7 and 8 Control Panel as well as this. So enjoy.<br />

But you must be running 32 bit Windows, because this is the 16 bit File Manager that cannot run on 64 bit Windows.<br />
<br />
File Manager has been in Windows from Windows 3x and there was also a 32 bit version that was in Windows NT3 and NT4. Both of which were 32 bit Windows and Windows 3x was 16 bit, although it could run 32 bit software.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Microsoft removed File Manager after Windows NT4 so it was not in Windows 2000. Though you can get it back but I have the 16 bit version from Windows 3.11, which I run on both Windows 7 and 8. So here is how to install it.<br />
<br />
You need to copy the following files from a Windows 3.11 install CD as shown in the picture. I explain how to extract files in my other post.<br />
<br />
The files you need are:<br />
<b><span style="color: blue;">Winfile.exe</span></b><br />
<b><span style="color: blue;">Winfile.bak</span></b><br />
<b><span style="color: blue;">Winfile.hlp (which tells you how to use File Manager)</span></b><br />
<b><span style="color: blue;">COMMCTRL.DLL</span></b><br />
<b><span style="color: blue;">SCONFIG.DLL</span></b><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-syeQkulkcmE/XZ3O6FtfZNI/AAAAAAAAB3g/sL0q0G1GEgg0rgZihF967-GbIZIYzXyRACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Win3x%2BFM%2Bfiles%2BWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-syeQkulkcmE/XZ3O6FtfZNI/AAAAAAAAB3g/sL0q0G1GEgg0rgZihF967-GbIZIYzXyRACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Win3x%2BFM%2Bfiles%2BWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Once you have got the files off the CD on Windows 7 and 8 place all of them in the <b>C\Windows\System32 folder.</b><br />
<br />
And also place the 2 dll files <span style="color: #cc0000;"><b><span style="color: #cc0000;">COMMCTRL.DLL</span></b> </span>and <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">SCONFIG.DLL</span></b> in the <b>C\Windows\System </b>folder, as well as in <b>C\Windows\System\32.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
File Manager is now installed and you can run the program on any 32 bit Windows, as well as on Windows 8.<br />
<br />
Here is File Manager from Windows 3.11 on my Windows 8 and as you can see it is working.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5I-S2Y2Yw4I/XZzM_GhiS3I/AAAAAAAAB1c/kmEoxcEd_HYdRjFFOdK_imAxyhRKqCpEQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Win3x%2BFile%2BManager%2BWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5I-S2Y2Yw4I/XZzM_GhiS3I/AAAAAAAAB1c/kmEoxcEd_HYdRjFFOdK_imAxyhRKqCpEQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Win3x%2BFile%2BManager%2BWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/PnYXAM2DSg8/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PnYXAM2DSg8?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
So yes you can run the 16 bit File Manager from Windows 3.11 on Windows 8.<br />

<br />
Today I am going to show you how to get the old MsConfig, which is System Configuration from Previous versions of Windows on 8. And this also works on Windows 8.1.<br />
<br />
So you have replaced the Windows 8 Task Manager with that from Windows XP or NT4, but there is one small problem. When you open System Configuration,also called MsConfig,it does not display the start up programs. Because Microsoft have changed this in the Windows 8 MsConfig and you now have to go to the Windows 8 Task Manager to see and manage your start up programs. But the Windows 7,Windows XP and Windows NT4 Task Manager does not have this.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
In Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows start up programs were managed in System Configuration but this was changed in Windows 8. But there is a way to get back the old System Configuration from previous versions of Windows so you can access the Start Up Programs menu again. But it's the one from Windows XP that we will be installing on 8, as the Windows 7 one did not work. And also the Windows XP one works best, so here is how to restore the Classic MsConfig on Windows 8.<br />
<br />
But before we do this just one word of warning. <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">DO NOT</span> </b>delete or edit the MsConfig Exe in System 32 on Windows 8. To do so may make Windows stop working. The Windows 8 MsConfig must remain where it is and the Windows XP MsConfig will run along side it.<br />
<br />
So to install the Windows XP System Configuration you just need to copy the <b><span style="color: blue;">MsConfig Exe </span></b>and <b><span style="color: blue;">hlp file</span><span style="color: blue;"> </span></b>from a computer running XP. Or if you don't have it installed you can extract both files from a Windows XP installation CD. <span style="color: #cc0000;"><b><a href="https://andreaborman2.blogspot.com/2017/12/extract-files-from-any-windows-cd-easy.html">See this post here on how to do this.</a></b></span><br />
<br />
Copy both files onto Windows 8 and rename the XP <b><span style="color: blue;">MsConfig Exe</span></b> to some thing such as <span style="color: blue;"><b>MsConfig2.</b></span> So that it does not conflict with the Windows 8 MsConfig. Once you have done that place both files in the C/Windows/System32 folder on Windows 8. You to run the program as administrator in order for it to work. To do this right click on the renamed MsConfig exe from XP, click <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Properties and select change settings for all users then select Run as administrator, save settings by clicking apply then OK then close.</span></b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VHPR0vMcM80/XYtJHam3viI/AAAAAAAAB1I/yLfYRjfPGkoaqq3guTObaC0Hxhc2cpuTgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/MsconfigXP%2BWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VHPR0vMcM80/XYtJHam3viI/AAAAAAAAB1I/yLfYRjfPGkoaqq3guTObaC0Hxhc2cpuTgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/MsconfigXP%2BWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The System Configuration from Windows XP will now work on Windows 8. As you can see in my screenshot. And you can use it to view and manage your start up programs from it the same way you could in Windows 7 and XP. If you need to edit the boot options you can still use the Windows 8 System Configuration for this.<br />
<br />

<div>
<br />
Microsoft has changed the Task Manager on Windows 8. It is a lot different from what it was in Windows 7 and previous versions of Windows. Many people including myself are not very happy with the new Task Manager that is on Windows 8. I have been having problems with it in that it is very slow to start. And often when I have run a program and it freezes or Explorer freezes or crashes, When I try to bring up Task Manager to end it. It takes ages to come up and by the time it does,it's too late and my system or program has crashed. Then I have to restart my program or whatever I am using again.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
I think the problem with Windows 8 Task Manager is that Microsoft have integrated so many other programs into it, is the reason why it's so slow. As well as that it does not kill the task right away as the Windows 7, and older Task Managers did. And often I cannot get it to run when I need it. So I decided it had to go. And the good news is you can get the old Task Manager back but it's not the one from Windows 7. Because it did not work but the Task Managers from Windows XP and Windows NT4 do.<br />
<br />
So without wasting any time I will show you how to get the old Task Manager back on Windows 8. And I will also explain the difference between the two Task Managers, so you can decide which one you want to use as the main Task Manager on Windows 8 and both work.<br />
<br />
First of all on Windows 8 go to the <b>C/Windows/System32</b> folder and look for the <b>Taskmager.exe.</b><br />
This is the Windows 8 Task Manager. You need to <b>take ownership of this file</b> by using a software such as <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Take Ownership.</span></b> Because Windows will not let you delete or rename the file until you do.<br />
Once you have taken ownership of it you can either rename it to something like <b>"Taskmagrold"</b>or delete it. I have chosen to delete it since I will not be using the Windows 8 Task Manager again.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vEvTTCuESdg/XXmNI7FTSTI/AAAAAAAABz4/CzK4p7l_9Lgqid_vu5bxc93oyOPsrH5-QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Take%2BOwnershipWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="576" data-original-width="1024" height="180" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vEvTTCuESdg/XXmNI7FTSTI/AAAAAAAABz4/CzK4p7l_9Lgqid_vu5bxc93oyOPsrH5-QCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Take%2BOwnershipWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Take Ownership Of The Windows 8 Task Manager File Then Delete It.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Once that's done you need to grab the files from Windows XP or Windows NT4 and copy them onto Windows 8.You can copy them from either the Windows NT4 and Windows XP install CD or from any computer you have Windows XP or NT4 on.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ACBCfHivvj8/XXmHnUWAESI/AAAAAAAABzs/3D7MnXnJpMc28Mdqd0vfLrRFpNyCNuKTQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/TMFiles%2BFrom%2BNT4..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ACBCfHivvj8/XXmHnUWAESI/AAAAAAAABzs/3D7MnXnJpMc28Mdqd0vfLrRFpNyCNuKTQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/TMFiles%2BFrom%2BNT4..JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Windows NT4 Task Manager Files.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
To install the Windows NT4 Task Manager extract or copy the following files from NT4:</div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Taskmgr.exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Taskmgr.cnt</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Taskmgr.hlp</span></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Place all of them in your<span style="color: blue; font-weight: bold;"> C/Windows/System32 </span>f<b>o</b>lder on Windows 8.<br />
<br />
<br />
If you want the Task Manager from Windows XP copy these files from XP:</div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Taskmgr.exe </span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Taskmgr hlp</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Taskmgr.chm</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div>
Repeat the above steps on Windows 8 as for installing the Windows NT4 Task Manager.<br />
Place in <b><span style="color: blue;">C/Windows/System32 </span></b>as shown in the screenshot.</div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BnC2v4yVKCQ/XXmN5jo5hCI/AAAAAAAAB0E/a88GBx57ttEHVPVZbXlDWGEygeFQ9VyvACEwYBhgL/s1600/XPTM%2BInstalledWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BnC2v4yVKCQ/XXmN5jo5hCI/AAAAAAAAB0E/a88GBx57ttEHVPVZbXlDWGEygeFQ9VyvACEwYBhgL/s320/XPTM%2BInstalledWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
<br />
<br />
Windows will now launch the Windows XP or Windows NT4 Task Manager instead of the Windows 8 one. And as you can see both are working on Windows 8.<br />
The Windows NT4 Task Manager will identify itself as Windows NT Task Manager and here it is on Windows 8.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rhrD5e0iNIE/XXmRkPsq8UI/AAAAAAAAB0M/PK9wno4EcY4yfF_ldkePR4MRFYwCUzIMQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/NT4%2BTMWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rhrD5e0iNIE/XXmRkPsq8UI/AAAAAAAAB0M/PK9wno4EcY4yfF_ldkePR4MRFYwCUzIMQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/NT4%2BTMWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
And this is the Windows XP Task Manager that I have chosen to have as my replacement for the Windows 8 one. As you can see both run on Windows 8 without any problems.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k4zerWrq6bM/XXmSO9as_3I/AAAAAAAAB0U/qTLypkqt71Y9aDBVQ9OXWov2j88wwYGRgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/XPTMWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k4zerWrq6bM/XXmSO9as_3I/AAAAAAAAB0U/qTLypkqt71Y9aDBVQ9OXWov2j88wwYGRgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/XPTMWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
All of the functions are there and System Configuration,also known as MsConfig,still works. And when I click on the link for Task Manager in it my Windows XP one opens.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nJDpZrLrNdg/XXmTeF7O8FI/AAAAAAAAB0g/sTqSPwbwN-EDhnHKzUB2KIxuF2EZaZfmACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/System%2BConfig%2BWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nJDpZrLrNdg/XXmTeF7O8FI/AAAAAAAAB0g/sTqSPwbwN-EDhnHKzUB2KIxuF2EZaZfmACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/System%2BConfig%2BWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
There are downloads on the web for the Windows 7 Task Manager that has been modified to work on Windows 8, but I do not recommend them. As they have been known to break System Configuration and Services no longer work. But this does not happen with the Windows XP or NT4 Task Manager. And both work with Task Scheduler,System Configuration, and Services the same way the Windows 8 task Manager did. Except I now have the Windows XP Task Manager, not the horrible Windows 8 one.<br />
<br />
Both the Windows NT4 and XP Task Managers also work on Windows 7 if you want to use them there. The only difference with the Windows 7 Task Manager from that of XP's one is that you can open Services from it. But you don't really need it because you can do this from the start menu.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/mgnArxdGHpI/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mgnArxdGHpI?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
So yes you can get back the old Task Manager in Windows 8 and this also works on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Though I am not sure about Windows 10 as I have not got that.<br />
<br />
To help you decide which one to have. Well the Windows XP Task Manager has the Applications,Processes,Performance and Networking Options.Which most of you are familiar with from using Windows XP and 7. The Windows NT4 Task Manager has the Applications,Processes and Performance, but no Networking options. And would suit those who want a more simple Task Manager to use just to kill tasks.<br />
Take your pick.<br />
<br />
You can read more about the functions of the Task Managers from Windows NT4, Windows XP and Windows 7 that have been changed in Windows 8 here:<br />

If you have used Windows 98, you will know about the spash screen with the nice music you get every time you log into Windows with the short tour of what's in Windows 98.<br />
<div>
This is known as the Welcome exe or Windows 98 Welcome.</div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
Well one member on the MSFN forums has actually managed to get it working on his Windows 7 computer. So I thought I would try it myself. First I tried it on Windows XP but it crashed instantly after a few seconds it was run, and the same thing happened when I tried on Windows Vista and 7.</div>
<div>
But when I tried it on Windows 8 it worked. Which I am surprised about since I cannot get it to run on any other version of Windows, not even on XP, but it works on 8! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I think it's because Windows 8 has better, more advanced features that can adapt older software to run on it. One of these is the Program Compatibility Assistant, that detects and adjusts the programs compatibility settings so it can run. Where as the Program Compatibility Assistant on Windows XP,Vista, and 7 cannot do this. And I have been able to run many other programs, from older versions of Windows on 8, that just did not work on Windows 7 or even XP.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well if you really do want to run the Windows 98 welcome on Windows 8, here is what you need to do. You need a Windows 98 install CD. Windows 98 SE is best and is where I extracted the files from.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On Windows 8 go to your Windows folder on C drive or where ever you have got Windows installed.</div>
<div>
Create a new folder called <b>Application Data </b>then inside that folder make another new folder and name it <b>Microsoft.</b> Then inside the Microsoft folder make yet another new folder and name that <b>Welcome.</b> The path should read <b>C/Windows/Application Data/Microsoft/Welcome </b>as shown in my screenshot.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once you have done that copy the following files from your Windows 98 CD into the Welcome Folder:</div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Welcom98 wav (soundfile)</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Tuneup.wbm</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Tour.wbm</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Regwiz.wbm</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Default.wbm</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">ICW.wbm</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Logo.wbm</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">MS.wbm</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Welcome.dat</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Weldata.exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Win.wbm</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
This is how it is on Windows 98 and it must be exactly the same for the Welcome Exe to work on Windows 8.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mCfjArlxFCg/XXHWm6DAJ4I/AAAAAAAAByw/ZHussKvSGOMuWMHscIba8Q3vCqs58m7hwCLcBGAs/s1600/Welcome98files..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mCfjArlxFCg/XXHWm6DAJ4I/AAAAAAAAByw/ZHussKvSGOMuWMHscIba8Q3vCqs58m7hwCLcBGAs/s320/Welcome98files..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then copy the other files also from the Windows 98 CD: </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Hhctrl.Ocx</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Regwiz.Exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Regwizc.Dll</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Membg.Html</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Membg.Dll</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Mstask.Exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Mstask.Dll</span></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Place them in the <b>C/Windows/System </b>folder on Windows 8. Both the <span style="color: #cc0000;"><b>Mstask.Dll</b> </span>and <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Mstask.Exe</span></b> must also be placed in the <b>C/Windows </b>folder on 8 as well as in the System folder.</div>
<div>
<br />
Please note, the above files must be in the <b><span style="color: blue;">Windows System</span></b> folder <b>NOT</b> System32 as Windows 98 uses the System folder to store it's main files. So will look for the files here.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-crXTQFPRv8g/XXHcEZ49KkI/AAAAAAAABy8/HZNu4-8wu64ku-0pZ_mXDn70tAKZmtW_QCLcBGAs/s1600/Welcom98files3..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-crXTQFPRv8g/XXHcEZ49KkI/AAAAAAAABy8/HZNu4-8wu64ku-0pZ_mXDn70tAKZmtW_QCLcBGAs/s320/Welcom98files3..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now copy the other Windows 98 files: </div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></b>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Tour98.Exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Welcome.Exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Tuneup.Exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Defrag.Exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Cleanmgr.Exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Scandskw.Exe</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Place them in the C/Windows folder on Windows 8 as shown here.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-STMGSsj6zOo/XXHgdu0_fLI/AAAAAAAABzI/vwsn2rziFyMsXHnbHT6w1KLuuwnkVz6fQCLcBGAs/s1600/Welcome98files2..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-STMGSsj6zOo/XXHgdu0_fLI/AAAAAAAABzI/vwsn2rziFyMsXHnbHT6w1KLuuwnkVz6fQCLcBGAs/s320/Welcome98files2..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b>You must run the Welcome Exe as administrator in order for it to work. </b>To do this click on the exe and click properties, then click "change settings for all users." Then select "run as administrator," save and close. The Windows 98 Welcome is now working on Windows 8 as you can see from my screenshots.</div>
<div>
<br />
Yes, there are some bugs, the Registration Wizard does not work when you click on it, neither could it find the Windows 98 tour, even though I have installed it. And could not find it on my Windows 98 CD on my DVD drive either.</div>
<div>
But everything else works, and if you miss the Windows 98 start up and music, you can enjoy it on Windows 8.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Windows 8 was the only one I could get it to work on. Why it did not work on Windows 7 or Windows XP and Vista I don't know. But it works on Windows 8 and should work on 8.1 though I am not sure about Windows 10. As I have not got it, but if it does please let me know.</div>
<div>
Many thanks to the members of MSFN Forums for sharing this with us. <b><span style="color: #cc0000;"><a href="https://msfn.org/board/topic/173510-how-to-run-welcomeexe-from-win98-on-newer-windows">The thread can be found here.</a></span></b><br />

In fact this is the best version I have tried as I found with Outlook 2000 although that did work on Windows XP,Windows Vista and Windows 7. It did not work well on Windows 8. Although I could send webmail on Windows 7 this did not work at all on 8.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
But when I tried Outlook 2003 I am happy to tell you it works and I am using it to send webmail from my G Mail accounts and also my Hotmail.<br />
Outlook 2003 has several email functions, you can use it for webmail or Microsoft Exchange and there are also other email server setings as shown here in the picture. To set up your email account you can do this by clicking the Mail icon in the control Panel or from Outlook.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Outlook Mail 2003 On Windows 8.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I have set up webmail with Outlook and I can send and receive emails in it. It also has a new look that is different from that of Outlook 2000 but I have not found any bugs. Except that when I change the toolbar buttons they also change in Wordpad. But this is not a problem<br />
<br />
Another bug is that rich text only displays as plain text if like me you are using the High Contrast theme. And the stationary feature does not show up either in High Contrast Theme. But if you are using the Aero or Windows 8 Basic Theme, both will work. As you can see in my picture.<br />
<br />

Outlook 2003 also has a calendar,a journal and an address book. And of course the office assistants that make Outlook more fun to use. And the office assistants work in all of the other Microsoft Office 2003 applications as well.<br />
<br />
This is Outlook 2003 on Windows 8.<br />

<br />
So yes you can run Outlook Mail 2003 on Windows 8 and 8.1. It also works on Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Microsoft Office 2003 was made for Windows XP, so I knew there was a good chance it would work on Windows 8, as it was made for later versions of Windows.<br />
<br />
Where as Microsoft Office 97 and 2000 is for Windows 95,98 and Windows 2000 but it still works on Windows XP and Windows 8. Even if it there are some bugs where as in MS Office 2003 there are none so far and this is the best version I have tried. Since all of the software is working but I am not sure if Microsoft Office 2003 or Outlook will work on Windows 10 because I have not got that. But it works fine on Windows 8.<br />

The operating system I am using here is Windows 8, but this also works on Windows 7,Windows vista and Windows XP.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The Genuis is the office assistant who was in Microsoft Office 97 and Office 2000. But for some strange reason Microsoft removed him from Office XP and later versions. Even if you install him from Office 2000 he does not show up in Office 2003. The other Microsoft Agent Characters do but The Genuis is nowhere to be found because Microsoft have blocked him from Office 2003.<br />
But here is a simple way to get him back.<br />
<br />
First you need to copy the Microsoft Agent character file "Genius" from your Microsoft Office 2000 CD as I did. Or if you don't have that you can download him from the Microsoft Agent website.<br />
<br />
You also need to have both Microsoft Agent and Double Agent installed if you are using Windows 7 or Windows 8. <b><span style="color: #cc0000;"><a href="http://doubleagent.sourceforge.net/">Double Agent can be downloaded from here.</a></span></b><br />
<br />
Once you have downloaded or copied the MS agent character file from Office 2000. You need go to your <b>Windows folder </b>on <b>C Drive </b>and paste it in the <b>MS Agent/Chars</b> folder. The trick is to <b>rename the Genuis Character </b>so that the system thinks he is another Microsoft Agent character. To do this click properties then rename as shown here in my picture. I have called him "Ben" but you can use any name you want.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CtRNc9S_yDs/XVxgbUuhOGI/AAAAAAAABx8/zO-VblPWFUg_nKfGddh8QVdyFvK6bIoIwCLcBGAs/s1600/GeniusWin8A.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CtRNc9S_yDs/XVxgbUuhOGI/AAAAAAAABx8/zO-VblPWFUg_nKfGddh8QVdyFvK6bIoIwCLcBGAs/s320/GeniusWin8A.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rename The Genius Exe File.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The Genuis is now back in Microsoft Office 2003 and here here is in Wordpad on my Windows 8. And he works the same way he did in MS Office 2000. A simple fix but it works.<br />
<br />

To install the Genius I just copied the character file from my Microsoft Office 2000 CD into the Microsoft Agent Chars folder on Windows 8. I have also set Deskbot to run in Program Compatibility Mode for Windows 98/ME to remove the color backgrounds from the characters. <b><span style="color: #e06666;"><a href="https://andreaborman2.blogspot.com/2019/06/remove-color-background-from-microsoft.html">See this post here on how to do this.</a></span></b><br />

Office 2003 was made for Windows XP so I hoped it would work on Windows 7 and 8 and it does.<br />
<div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Everything works including Outlook Mail and what is different about this version of Office is that all of the Microsoft Agent characters that you have installed in other programs such as Deskbot also work in Office 2003 as you can see in my video and in the pictures. And if you are using it on Windows XP all of the Search Companions Rover, Courtney and the others work in Microsoft Office 2003. </div>
<div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
What's also great about this edition is that Outlook Mail is fully functional in Windows 8 and I can use it to send both webmail. Or use the Microsoft Exchange protocol which I could not do with Outlook 2000.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

All of the other applications work and here is Microsoft Power Point on Windows 8.<br />

<br />
So yes you can run microsoft Office 2003 on Windows 8 as well as on Windows Vista and Windows 7. This is also the last version of Office to have the office assistants. Microsoft removed them in Office 2007.<br />

<div>
The animated characters Merlin, Rover The Dog and others are the office assistants found in Microsoft Office 2003 and in other applications such as Deskbot and Mash.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
They all work fine on later versions of Windows including Windows 8. But there is either a pink or green color square background around the characters which some people don't like. The backgrounds can also be purple,orange or another color depending on the character. The Hotfix for Microsoft Agent from Microsoft does not remove this.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q5YdJ5PnqHI/XRkNbXYZSDI/AAAAAAAABv8/kVzXxtmq1Fovut--jMfagOZ2cfQRBIdJQCLcBGAs/s1600/MS%2BAgent%2BBug%2BWin7..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q5YdJ5PnqHI/XRkNbXYZSDI/AAAAAAAABv8/kVzXxtmq1Fovut--jMfagOZ2cfQRBIdJQCLcBGAs/s320/MS%2BAgent%2BBug%2BWin7..JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Green Background Around Microsoft Agent Characters On Windows 7.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you are using the Windows Classic or High Contrast Theme on Windows Vista and Windows 7 there is no problem as they display normally as they do on Windows XP without the background.</div>
<div>
But if, as most people, you are using the Aero Theme, then you either get the pink, red or other background color around the animated characters. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And on Windows 8 this does not go away even if you are using the High Contrast Theme. I don't know why this is but it seems to have something to do with the display or theme on Windows Vista,7 and 8 which is incompatible with the Microsoft Agents. As they did not have Aero Theme on Windows XP and older versions of Windows.So that seems to be why they display with the green or other color backgrounds instead of transparent as they should be.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Though there is a way to fix this, so here is how.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you are using Deskbot or Mash you need to apply the program compatibility settings to make it run for older versions of Windows. To do this go to the exe program file in either your start menu or in Programs on C Drive. Then click <b>Properties,</b> then select <b>change settings for all users</b>.</div>
<div>
Set the program to run in <b>compatibility mode for Windows98/ME </b>as shown in image.</div>
<div>
<b>Click apply then Ok to save settings then close.</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B-5KscOuRbU/XRkOAX1xFXI/AAAAAAAABwE/TtxKxyR4X-46KGdzizxiFETZxkIatl7IgCLcBGAs/s1600/Set%2BCompatWin8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B-5KscOuRbU/XRkOAX1xFXI/AAAAAAAABwE/TtxKxyR4X-46KGdzizxiFETZxkIatl7IgCLcBGAs/s320/Set%2BCompatWin8..JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Apply Compatibility Settings As Shown In Image.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Now when you run either Deskbot or Mash the color background is gone and this also works on Windows 8 as well as on Windows 7 and Vista. As you can see in my pictures on Windows 8 both in Windows Classic and Aero Theme. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Please note that this won't work in Microsoft Office 2000 or 2003 and you should not set compatibility mode for Outlook or any of the office applications because they will stop working. But it works for me on Deskbot and now have the transparent background as it was on Windows XP on my Windows 7 and 8. See also my video which shows you how to do this.<br />

So was installed in Windows 95,98,Windows 2000 and Windows ME. This screensaver works fine on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 8 and 8.1 but not on Windows 7.<br />
However I have managed to find a fix to get the screensaver to work on Windows 7 and it does. So here is what you need to do.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
On Windows 7 go to your Windows folder and create a new folder called Channel Screensaver.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xY6aXuTkrNI/XRkAuI3BZWI/AAAAAAAABvo/NgS9aB15XuINyFnL-5VQ7-5XYm3qizb6ACLcBGAs/s1600/Chscrensaver%2BFolder%2BWin7..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xY6aXuTkrNI/XRkAuI3BZWI/AAAAAAAABvo/NgS9aB15XuINyFnL-5VQ7-5XYm3qizb6ACLcBGAs/s320/Chscrensaver%2BFolder%2BWin7..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Then copy and paste the screensaver file into this folder.<br />
To run the screensaver click install instead of test. If you just open the file then the screensaver won't run but if you click install it will. When you click install you are then presented with the option to test the screensaver in the drop down screensaver menu.<br />
See screenshot.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Tos6yNRE5XE/XRkA-A4q1zI/AAAAAAAABvw/yxEXr4orSDcSFqclZ65FK0Psp5W_Hq81QCLcBGAs/s1600/ChScreensaver2%2BWin7..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Tos6yNRE5XE/XRkA-A4q1zI/AAAAAAAABvw/yxEXr4orSDcSFqclZ65FK0Psp5W_Hq81QCLcBGAs/s320/ChScreensaver2%2BWin7..JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Click preview as shown in the image. It's not the perfect solution but it does work and you can now run Channel Screensaver on Windows 7. See also my video which shows Channel Screensaver in action on Windows 7.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

I am not sure about Windows 10 because I am not using that.<br />
<span style="color: blue;"><b><br /></b></span>
On Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows you can rename the Network Icon which was My Network Places in Windows XP or Network Neighborhood in Windows 98 to any name you wanted.<br />
Microsoft for same reason disabled this feature in Windows Vista and later Windows. But this feature is not removed and there is a way to get it back with a simple registry edit<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
I was searching online and I found a post on a Windows forum, Eight Forums from a member called Butters who explains how to do this. I tried it for myself and it worked.<br />
<br />
You need to navigate to the following registry key:<br />
<br />
<b>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C}\ShellFolder</b><br />
<br />
You first need to take ownership of this key.<br />
The easiest way to do this is to install a software called <b>Registry Take Ownership.</b><br />
<br />
After you have taken ownership of the ShellFolder key, double click on the Attributes value on the right pane.<br />
<br />
<br />
Then change the 'Value Data' box from <b>b0040064</b> to <b>b0040070</b><br />
<br />
Close the Registry Editor. Then restart your computer.<br />
<br />
NetworkiIcon can now be renamed and as you can see in the pictures on Windows 7 I am now able to rename the network icon in Windows Explorer on Windows 7. I have renamed it My Network Places as it is on Windows XP but you can call it any name you wish and change the name as many times as you want.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Windows Mail and Windows Calendar are part of Windows Vista but they also run on Windows 7 and 8. But Windows Calendar does not open in Windows Mail as it does in Vista, it needs some help.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I was able to copy the registry keys from my Windows<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Vista laptop onto both my Windows 7 and 8 laptops. I ran the reg file and it worked.<br />
<br />
I can now open Windows Calendar in Windows Mail and Windows Calendar is also now listed in the Default Programs menu.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<b>To install Windows Calendar on Windows 7 or 8.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
On Windows Vista copy the program file which can be found in <b>Programs</b> folder on C Drive.<br />
<br />

<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
<b>On Windows 7 and 8.</b><br />
<br />
Place the Windows Calendar Program files that you copied from Vista into the<b> C/Programs</b> folder.<br />
<br />
<br />
Copy the following registry script.<br />
<br />
This is the registry key from Windows Vista.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Here is the registry script.</b><br />
<br />
Copy and paste in notepad or Wordpad.<br />
<br />
Save as a reg file.<br />
<br />
Then run it and restart your computer.<br />
<br />
You will now be able to open Windows Calendar in Windows Mail on Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1. The same as you can on Windows Vista.<br />

<br />
Well there is not much you can say about the default wallpaper that everybody sees when they first boot into the desktop on Windows 7.<br />
It's, well, boring and not much to look at.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rUly308dWs8/XGeJL0TdCVI/AAAAAAAABrs/8ljz-KgtoO8Mv-q44xKjjt2IYI42wKKGgCLcBGAs/s1600/W71a.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rUly308dWs8/XGeJL0TdCVI/AAAAAAAABrs/8ljz-KgtoO8Mv-q44xKjjt2IYI42wKKGgCLcBGAs/s320/W71a.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Windows 7 Default Background.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
But here is how you can replace it with any wallpaper of your choic<br />
<br />
You can use any image you want. It can be an image from the web or different wallpaper but it must be a JPG file for it to work.<br />
<br />
You can convert any image such as a PNG or bitmap file to JPG, simply by opening the image in paint. Then saving it as a JPG file.<br />
<br />
Once you have chosen your new wallpaper, open Windows Explorer.<br />
<br />
<b>Then go to C/Windows/Web/Wallpaper.</b><br />
<br />
As shown here in image.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x7oqG6n_5Xo/XGeP94HEC9I/AAAAAAAABr4/vJ8oL7KdR1wAc5LV5EwpjUtCgcoekKELACLcBGAs/s1600/W72b.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x7oqG6n_5Xo/XGeP94HEC9I/AAAAAAAABr4/vJ8oL7KdR1wAc5LV5EwpjUtCgcoekKELACLcBGAs/s320/W72b.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
See also my video on how to do this.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ADDVDx4TXxs/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ADDVDx4TXxs?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is where Windows stores all of the wallpapers.<br />
<br />
In this folder you will see another folder named <b>Windows.</b><br />
Inside this folder is the default Windows wallpaper named <b>img0.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
You need to delete this file and replace it with your own wallpaper.<br />
But Windows won't let you do it, as it's a system file owned by Trusted Installer. So you first need to take ownership of it so you can delete it and replace it with your own image.<br />
<br />
You can use a software called Take Ownership to do this.<br />
<br />
Take ownership of the image file img0 then you can delete it.<br />
<br />
Or you can rename it to something like img0 old if you want to save it somewhere in case you want to revert back to the default image.<br />
<br />
Once you have done this copy your new image into the folder then rename it img0 then go to themes and click on default theme.<br />
<br />
Windows will now display your own custom wallpaper as the default background.<br />
<br />
As you can see I have chosen Windows 7 beta as my default wallpaper.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FHfQe55JU2k/XGeUPO7df9I/AAAAAAAABsE/tPHMP89aNV856ZyyIc15_1zmn9tCv9tQACLcBGAs/s1600/W72c.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FHfQe55JU2k/XGeUPO7df9I/AAAAAAAABsE/tPHMP89aNV856ZyyIc15_1zmn9tCv9tQACLcBGAs/s320/W72c.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Custom Wallpaper.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
You can download <b><a href="https://winaero.com/download.php?view.16">Take Ownership from here.</a></b><br />

This works on Windows 7,Windows 8 and 8.1.<br />
<br />
In my other post I showed you how to install and run Outlook Express the email program from Windows XP on Windows 8 and 8 and 8.1.</div>
<div>
But it does not show up in default programs list which is annoying because it's difficult to set it as your default program.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But I have found a fix for that which is to import the registry entries from Windows XP onto Windows 7 and 8.</div>
<div>
I searched through my XP computer and found them and copied them onto my Windows 7 and 8.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You first have to get Outlook Express installed.</div>
<div>
<br />
Please see this post here:</div>
<div>
<b><a href="https://andreaborman2.blogspot.com/2017/10/get-back-outlook-express-on-windows-7.html">Outlook Express On Windows 7 and 8.</a></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once you have done this copy the following registry script here and paste it in notepad.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: blue;">Also works on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. But you must be running 32 bit Windows as 16 bit software does not work on 64 bit.</span></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Internet Explorer 3 was in Windows NT4 and early versions of Windows 95. But Microsoft also made 16 bit versions of IE for Windows 3.1 and 3.11.</div>
<div>
IE1, IE2, IE3, IE4 and IE5 came in either 16 or 32 bit ,depending on the Operating System.</div>
<div>
<br />
So for a bit of fun I installed the 16 bit version of IE3 for Windows 3.11 on Windows 8. To see if it could run and it does. I am surprised as I did not think it could run on 8 but here it is running on my 32 bit Windows 8.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The 32 bit version of IE would not install but the 16 bit version does. </div>
<div>
<div>
<b><br /></b>
<b>How to install on Windows 7 and 8. </b><br />
<br />
You need to run the installer as administrator.<br />
<br />
Then copy the <b><span style="color: blue;">IEDKCS16.DLL </span></b>to both the <span style="color: blue;"><b>Windows/System folder</b></span> <b><span style="color: blue;">and the Windows/System 32 folders on C Drive or where ever you have got Windows 7 or 8 installed.</span></b></div>
<div>
<br />
Do the same thing if installing on Windows XP or Windows Vista.<br />
<br />
Restart your computer if it tells you to.<br />
<br />
The install of IE3 is different from the 32 bit install in that it is installed in the Windows not Programs folder as 32 bit IE is. But it will still work.<br />

<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br /></div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Internet Explorer 3 comes bundled with Internet Mail And News and also Real Audio Player. A very old version of Real Player that can only play audio files though it could not play anything because it does not support Windows Media files.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Still both the web browser and the email program works and here are some screen shots of IE3 and Internet Mail running on Windows 8. </div>
<div>

You may be wondering if Internet Explorer 4 or 5 works on Windows XP, Windows 7 or 8. The answer is NO it does not. I could not even get the 16 bit to install. But IE3 does.<br />

And it also works on Windows Vista and Windows XP and you can send and get emails with it.<br />
But will it work on Windows 8? That is the question.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I tested both Microsoft Office 2000 and Outlook Mail on my Windows 8 computer.<br />
I am running Windows 8 32 bit and I found Outlook does open and run but I could not set it up for web mail.<br />
<br />
To get the Outlook Address Book to open on Windows 8 you need to follow the steps as for Windows 7.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #cc0000;"><a href="https://andreaborman2.blogspot.com/2018/06/outlook-mail-2000-on-windows-7.html">See Set Up Outlook 2000 On Windows 7.</a></span></b><br />
<br />
<br />
Once Outlook is installed go to<b> C/Programs/Common Files/System folder </b>on Windows 8.<br />
<br />
Then copy both the <b><span style="color: blue;">WAB32.DLL</span></b> and <b><span style="color: blue;">WAB32 RES.DLL </span></b>and paste both dlls in the <b>C/Windows/System32 folder.</b><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
When you set up Outlook for the first time it will ask you for the Microsoft Office CD. Then you can choose to set it up for either Internet Mail. Which is if you want to send email from your web mail accounts like Gmail or Yahoo Mail. Or Corporate Mode for the Microsoft Exchange Server if you want to just send email from one computer to another computer on your network.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vuY59Q_UWzQ/WyfOwawrIOI/AAAAAAAABi0/_NAQavojCc4PsEhW3GwKmoVKHrBCA2cqACLcBGAs/s1600/Outlook%2BWin%2B8%2B1..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="258" data-original-width="458" height="180" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vuY59Q_UWzQ/WyfOwawrIOI/AAAAAAAABi0/_NAQavojCc4PsEhW3GwKmoVKHrBCA2cqACLcBGAs/s320/Outlook%2BWin%2B8%2B1..JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">First time set up with Outlook 2000 on Windows 8.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Well I have tried it on my Windows 8 and I found that it does not work at all with web mail.<br />
When I try to set it up for web mail Outlook won't open it crashes.<br />
But when I set it up as Corporate Mode it does run and I can browse my exchange folders and email profiles I have set up. But I have not been able to send any email s though this could be because I do not have a Microsoft Exchange Account or server.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4YGw2mLBs5I/WyfPI2tKJlI/AAAAAAAABi8/jz4YUflC3VM6nsKwYOVwosrLVdB-luldACLcBGAs/s1600/Outlook%2BWindows%2B8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1024" height="187" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4YGw2mLBs5I/WyfPI2tKJlI/AAAAAAAABi8/jz4YUflC3VM6nsKwYOVwosrLVdB-luldACLcBGAs/s320/Outlook%2BWindows%2B8..JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here Is Outlook 2000 on Windows 8 with the Office Assistant of course.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LFo6g4FePZU/WyfPcKe9MdI/AAAAAAAABjE/XHgqqSAkdqYzZkqZreBMhZBAaK0pw5phwCLcBGAs/s1600/Outlook%2BWin%2B8..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="258" data-original-width="458" height="180" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LFo6g4FePZU/WyfPcKe9MdI/AAAAAAAABjE/XHgqqSAkdqYzZkqZreBMhZBAaK0pw5phwCLcBGAs/s320/Outlook%2BWin%2B8..JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Outlook Mail 2000 on Windows 8.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
However I was able to use the Calendar that comes with Outlook and the Outlook Address book also works. But that is all I can do. I cannot send emails.<br />
<br />
So the short answer to can I run Outlook in Windows 8 is NO. At least not to send emails but you can view your email contacts and export them to other email programs like Windows Mail or Thunderbird. But I have not been able to get Outlook 2000 to work on Windows 8.<br />
There may be a fix for this but I have not found one.<br />
<br />
Another thing is, if you want to change the mode from Internet Mail for corporate Mode in Outlook 2k. It will again ask you to insert your MS Office CD which is a pain.<br />
But still Outlook 2000 is a very old program but it does work on all Windows except for Windows 8 and above.<br />
<br />
<br />
Also if you have Microsoft Mail Post Office installed you can view and edit all of your Outlook profiles from the Mail Icon in Control Panel. As shown here and set up and administer a post office.<br />
<br />
For more about Microsoft Exchange see here which can explain it better than I can.<br />
