Debian Trixie which is Debian Testing has recently been updated from Gnome 46 to Gnome 47. With it comes new features which I welcome. One of the not so good features is that for some strange reason Gnome have removed the link to the computer folder in Nautilus the file manager which I think is a stupid idea. As most people including myself like to view their Computer folder. As it is where all of the system files are stored. In previous versions of Gnome the Computer folder was called "Other Locations" and it was here you could view both your computer drive and your system files.
Nautilus and as you can see the Computer Folder is not there. |
There is a simple way to get the Computer icon or link to the Computer folder back in Nautilus which I will show you here. So here is how.
Open Nautilus then go to the search bar and type / as shown in the screenshot. This brings up the Computer folder.
Right click with your mouse then click "add to Bookmarks."
Create the shortcut and rename it Computer. |
This creates the shortcut now we just need to name it Computer or Other Locations if you prefer.
As you can see the Computer folder is now visible again and you can easy access your files.
Computer folder in Nautilus. |
The Computer icon has been added as a bookmark. It is not the perfect solution but it works and it solves the problem. Another option is to install either Nemo or Caja file manager and use that instead.
I am using Caja with Gnome and I have also used Nemo. I find they are much better file managers than Nautilus. Both file managers are based on the old version of Nautilus so both work well with Gnome.
While you cannot remove Nautilus because to do so would also remove the Gnome desktop. You use Nemo or Caja instead and set either as the default file manager. Once you do this Nemo or Caja (depending on which one you have installed) will open all of your files instead of Nautilus.
You can also create the bookmark for the Computer folder in Nemo or Caja and it will also show up in Nautilus. Both workarounds work which solves the problem.
